Initiatives Project History
Reimagining Climate Change Adaptation Initiative
Our National Strategy for Just Adaptation was the result of the Reimagining Climate Change Adaptation Initiative engaged from 2021-2022.
The initiative was an extensive project including an Expert Working Group, the Reimagining Climate Adaptation Summit, and eventual launch of the strategy by Senator Jenny McAllister at Parliament House in September 2022.
“This will be and should be a must-read for climate adaptation policy makers, planners, project managers and parliamentarians." - Senator Jenny McAllister
Sustainable Oceans and Coasts Initiative
Future Earth Australia was inspired by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development to create a National Ten-Year Strategy for Sustainable Oceans and Coasts. This resulted in our Sustainable Oceans and Coasts Strategy 2021-2030.
This process included an Expert Working Group, scoping workshops with key stakeholders, consultation workshops, consultation outcome papers, feedback and eventual launch of the strategy. The Sustainable Oceans and Coasts Strategy was launched in June 2021 at the SRI2021 Conference in Brisbane.
Australian Sustainable Cities and Communities Initiative
In 2018, Future Earth Australia adopted ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’ as a priority focus area to envision how knowledge could support Australia’s transformation to sustainable urban systems. The Sustainable Cities and Communities Initiative resulted in our 2019 Sustainable Cities and Regions 10-Year Strategy.
This strategy has since been updated in 2024 to account for the confounding ongoing effects of COVID-19 and extreme weather events on urban spaces. The Sustainable Cities and Regions: 2024 Update was published in May 2024, based off the original Strategy, and enhanced by a new round of consultations.
